Class Description

In this class, the basics of ASL (American Sign Language) will be visually taught including fingerspelling, basic ASL grammar which differ significantly from English, basic signs for common words and phrases surrounding everyday topics such as every day objects, people, places, and actions. The students will also be introduced to the Deaf community, its history and its culture. Interactive lessons and activities will be used to give the students opportunities to practice basic conversational skills including introducing themselves, asking and answering questions and sharing personal information whilst focusing on building their comprehension and communication skills in ASL.


There will be quizzes, sign production and comprehension exams, journal activities and projects throughout the year. This course will fulfill one year of foreign language credit for high school.
