Class Description

This year-long class covers traditional pre-algebra material (with integrated geometry) preparing the student for Algebra 1. The student should be competent in division of fractions and decimals, GCF, LCM, percentages, and reducing and simplifying fractions. No calculators are allowed in this class.

Prerequisite:  Saxon 76, Saxon 87, or similar

This class is closed to new students in the spring semester.

Class time will be spent on the presentation of new material (approximately four to six lessons per week) and answering homework questions as time permits.  Parents will grade assigned problem sets so that the student has an opportunity to self-correct before coming to class with questions.  On occasion, homework will be collected and graded by the mentor.  There will be quizzes (some in-class and some take-home) and an occasional take-home test.  Although this class is not a high school credit course, it is taught at an honors level.  Please be sure your student is ready for the rigors of an honors course (e.g. heavy on theory, the use of outside resources and assignments provided by the instructor, frequent testing, a brisk pace, and a seven-point grading scale).  Parents are not required to know the subject matter, but must facilitate the learning of the subject during the week such as checking that assignments are completed, pre-grading assignments, securing tutoring help if needed so that the student does not fall behind, checking comments on graded work when returned to the student, signing progress reports (three per semester), etc.
